It was chosen through Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of Mitsubishi, as it was suggestive of the emblem of the Tosa Kin who first employed them, and because his own family crest was about three rhombuses stacked atop the other. The name Mitsubishi is a compound of mitsu ("three") and also hishi (literally, "water chestnut", often used in Japan to denote a gemstone or rhombus).
