It was chosen by means of Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of Mitsubishi, as it was suggestive of the emblem of the Tosa Clan who first employed them, and because his unique family crest was about three rhombuses stacked atop each other. The name Mitsubishi is usually a compound of mitsu ("three") along with hishi (literally, "water chestnut", often used in Japoneses to denote a gemstone or rhombus).
